Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter of Lithuanian as well as Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. She was only a young child when her father, who worked as an carnival barker, died. The mother of the family had to work in jobs including waitressing and cleaning. Ruth was born in the poorest neighborhood in Boston Massachusetts where she enrolled in school. She only attended the school for two years, before taking a break to pursue her acting career. The path was difficult to take. While she was offered an interview as a hat check girl in New York posing as a writer for a mystery publication but no theater jobs came her way. After that, she was the hat checker in a night club before calling her quits and relocating to Boston. She was an usherette in the mornings and was a part of the New England Repertory Company by night, which was her first permanent acting gig. She also studied drama and eventually graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
